Liberia, IFAD partner to launch US$5.3M agroecology project

LIBERIA – The Liberian government and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) have signed a US$5.3 million grant agreement for an agricultural initiative called “Scaling-Up Agroecology Approaches in Liberia.”

The project, funded by the European Union, was announced on December 4 and will run for four years starting in 2025, according to a statement from the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning.

The program is designed to enhance food security, improve rural livelihoods, and build resilience against climate change, with a focus on horticultural development.

The ministry highlighted that the project will introduce sustainable farming techniques, improve soil quality, and promote efficient water use and irrigation practices.

This initiative is expected to help Liberian farmers address the challenges posed by climate change, enhance food production, and create opportunities for generating income,” said Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan, Liberia’s Minister of Finance.

The new project is part of broader efforts by the Liberian government to develop its agricultural sector, which plays a significant role in the country’s economy.

Agriculture accounts for 34% of Liberia’s GDP and employs approximately 39% of the active workforce.

Earlier this year, Liberia unveiled its National Agricultural Development Program (NADP) in July, which outlines a US$778 million investment plan for 2024 and 2025.

The program aims to strengthen the agricultural sector and improve the livelihoods of farmers through increased support and infrastructure development.

The Scaling-Up Agroecology Approaches project is expected to complement these efforts by addressing critical challenges related to climate resilience and sustainable farming practices.

Liberia continues to rely on international partnerships to expand its agricultural initiatives.

The collaboration with IFAD and the European Union is part of a broader strategy to address food insecurity and promote rural development in the West African nation.
