Marel unveils maintenance-free stainless-steel chain for meat processing lines

ICELAND – Marel has introduced a new stainless-steel chain designed for meat processing lines, claiming it eliminates the need for maintenance while improving production efficiency and food safety.

The company states that the chain has undergone years of testing and refinement to ensure durability and performance in industrial meat processing environments.

Unlike traditional chains that require lubrication and frequent servicing, this stainless-steel version is resistant to rust and corrosion, reducing downtime and operational costs.

Marel highlights several benefits of the new product, including increased uptime, as the maintenance-free design eliminates interruptions for servicing.

The company also emphasizes cost savings, noting that no lubrication is required, which cuts expenses on oil and labor.

Food safety is another key focus, as removing the need for lubrication eliminates the risk of contamination from oil exposure.

Additionally, Marel claims that the chain contributes to higher yield by enabling cleaner and more efficient processing, which could improve profitability for meat processors.

The launch of the new stainless-steel chain comes shortly after a major corporate development for Marel.

In early January 2025, the Icelandic meat and food processing equipment manufacturer was acquired by John Bean Technologies Corporation (JBT), a U.S.-based company specializing in food processing solutions.

The two companies have merged under the name JBT Marel Corporation, which began trading on January 3 on both the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq Iceland.

Brian Deck, the newly appointed chief executive officer of JBT Marel Corporation, described the merger as the result of over a year of planning and preparation.

He stated that the newly formed company aims to innovate within the food industry by combining the expertise, operational scale, and digital technologies of both businesses.

Árni Sigurdsson, who previously worked with Marel and now serves as the president of JBT Marel Corporation, acknowledged the teams from both companies for their efforts in completing the transition.

He noted that the company’s main focus moving forward will be integrating the businesses while ensuring consistent service for customers.

Sigurdsson added that JBT Marel will work to deliver greater value to customers, shareholders, and stakeholders through the combined strengths of the two firms.
