Marfrig reports progress in animal welfare, financial performance

The company has improved its global farm animal welfare ranking after posting strong 2024 earnings.

BRAZIL -Marfrig has announced a significant improvement in its performance in the Business Benchmark on Farm Animal Welfare (BBFAW), recording a 47% increase in its overall score between 2023 and 2024.

The company’s score rose from 28 to 41 points, consolidating its position in Tier 4 of the global ranking that evaluates how food companies manage animal welfare across their supply chains.

Progress was registered in four out of the five pillars assessed by BBFAW, with the most notable gains in the areas of “Supplier Performance in Animal Welfare” and “Reducing Dependence on Animal Foods.”

These improvements reflect changes made to Marfrig’s animal welfare practices, including efforts to engage with suppliers of alternative proteins, updates to internal policies, and the introduction of new global targets.

The company stated that the result demonstrates its ongoing focus on adopting responsible animal husbandry practices across its operations.

Score increase follows broader sustainability efforts

Earlier this year, Marfrig reported other developments aligned with its sustainability agenda, including recognition from global ESG rating organizations.

It retained its position as the top-rated company in its industry by the FAIRR Initiative, which evaluates environmental and social risks in the food sector.

For the first time, the company also received an “A” rating in all three categories of CDP’s environmental assessments—Climate Change, Water Security, and Forests.

These recognitions were issued alongside the release of Marfrig’s 2024 financial results, in which the company posted a net income of US$571 million (US$) and a consolidated adjusted EBITDA of US$2.77 billion (US$).

The company linked its financial performance to its strategy of diversifying geographically and across different protein sources, while improving operational efficiency and prioritizing high-value products.

As it prepares for 2025, Marfrig says it intends to continue expanding its global presence, while adhering to its financial plan and corporate commitments around sustainability.
