MAURITIUS – The Mauritius Prison Service (MPS) has recently inaugurated a new fish processing plant at the Richelieu Open Prison in Chebel.
The ceremony, attended by the Minister of Blue Economy, Marine Resources, Fisheries, and Shipping, Mr. Sudheer Maudhoo, and the Commissioner of Prisons, Mr. Jaganaden Rungadoo, marked the successful completion of the facility’s first Berry Rouge harvest.
During the event, Minister Maudhoo presented equipment to Commissioner Rungadoo to support Berry Rouge production.
In his speech, Minister Maudhoo commended the MPS for its commitment to Berry Rouge aquaculture, which began in 2020.
He highlighted the project’s progress, noting that it now includes ten fishing ponds with a total of approximately 50,000 Berry Rouge fish.
The Minister encouraged the MPS to consider expanding their operations to include freshwater prawn farming, citing aquaculture’s role in enhancing food security.
Minister Maudhoo praised the MPS for its innovative approach, which not only benefits the local economy but also aids in rehabilitating inmates.
He recalled that the Ministry and MPS had previously signed a Memorandum of Understanding to support inmate skill development and environmental improvement.
He acknowledged the successful completion of various renovation projects by the detainees, including metal painting, electrical work, plumbing, and gardening.
The Minister expressed his appreciation for the detainees’ dedication and confirmed the government’s ongoing support for those who wish to start their own businesses after their release.
Mauritius’ fish industry is experiencing growth, with revenue in the Fish & Seafood sector projected to reach US$295.20 million in 2024.
The market is anticipated to grow at an annual rate of 6.01% from 2024 to 2029.
Fish production in Mauritius is expected to increase to 2,610 metric tons by 2028, up from 2,410 metric tons in 2023.
