INDIA – A leading quick-service restaurant chain, McDonald’s India has introduced whole wheat buns in its restaurants to offer customers with wholesome and nutritious food offerings.

According to an ET Retail report, the whole wheat buns will be available in burgers as well as other products on the breakfast menu.

“McDonald’s in India has been setting the standards for the industry. We announced ‘The Good Food Story’ earlier this year with a commitment to bring wholesome and nutritious food options to our consumers,” said Amit Jatia, Vice-Chairman of Westlife Development Limited, which owns McDonald’s in south and west part of India.

In a press release, McDonald’s said the introduction of the whole wheat buns lined with sesame seeds on top was inspired by FSSAI’s ‘Eat Right Movement’ which states: Eating carbohydrates provides body with much needed energy.

However, overindulging on them can have negative side effects such as weight gain.

The release also listed the potential benefits of consuming whole wheat buns, saying that the buns are a source of fibre, while the sesame seeds may help in digestion.

Health watchers say burgers served at fast food restaurants contain vegetables and meats, but are also loaded with excessive salt, trans fats and preservatives thus need restrict their consumption.

McDonald’s, last month announced plans to eliminate preservatives and other artificial ingredients from the food that will be served in all their outlets across America.

In west and south India, the company said it was reducing the sodium and oil content in its products by 20% and 40% respectively.
