NETHERLANDS – Mosa Meat, a pioneer in cultivated beef production, has become the world’s very first cultivated meat company to acquire certification as a Certified B Corporation (B Corp).
With a mission to foster a more sustainable food system and uniting partners, investors, and suppliers, Mosa Meat’s B Corp Certification underscored its commitment to reshaping the global food landscape in an environmentally and socially responsible manner.
Founded in 2016, Mosa Meat catapulted to international prominence in 2013 when its visionary founders, Mark Post and Peter Verstrate, unveiled the world’s inaugural cultivated beef hamburger, grown directly from cow cells.
Since that groundbreaking moment, the company has remained steadfast in its dedication to producing authentic beef while simultaneously benefiting people, animals, and the planet.
Mosa Meat’s B Corp™ Certification serves as a validation of its transformative mission, highlighting its outstanding environmental and social performance, unwavering commitment to accountability and transparency, and leadership in catalyzing change within economic systems.
“We are thrilled to become B Corp Certified. This certification validates our commitment to sustainable practices and ethical foundations as well as strengthens our position as trendsetters in the global cellular agriculture movement,” Maarten Bosch, CEO of Mosa Meat, stated.
“We believe in creating real, delicious meat that positively impacts the climate and our food system and are optimistic that these values will be shared across the many stakeholders in our nascent field of cellular agriculture.”
Leonardo DiCaprio, an advisor and investor for Mosa Meat, also credited Mosa Meat as a consistent champion for change in the food industry.
“I am proud to see Mosa Meat be the first cultivated meat company in the world to become B Corp Certified and hope it is the first of many,” he said.
According to the company, the path to B Corp Certification involved a rigorous assessment of the businesses’ performance, accountability, and transparency in terms of their social and environmental impact.
It encompassed comprehensive evaluations of governance, mission alignment, environmental practices, worker welfare, and supply chain ethics.
By achieving this certification, Mosa Meat joins a distinguished community of conscientious and courageous leaders, including Patagonia, Amy’s Kitchen, and Ben & Jerry’s, who have previously earned Certified B Corporation™ status.
Mosa Meat’s journey to certification spanned over a year, ultimately resulting in the company earning two Impact Business Models (IBMs), ‘Resource Conservation’ and ‘Mission Locked.’
In a report the company also highlighted its quest to maximize its positive climate impact, by prioritizing the cultivation of beef over other meat types and powers its production facility with 100% renewable energy.
