MYANMAR – Myanmar is projected to earn US$805M from aquatic exports this fiscal year, with a significant increase in fish and shrimp exports, according to a report by state-run television channel MRTV, citing Nyunt Win, the director of the Department of Fisheries.
The country is exporting its aquatic products to more than 40 countries, with China and Thailand being the primary importers.
In the fiscal year 2023-24, Myanmar has already earned over US$720M from the export of more than 522,000 tons of aquatic products, with over 240,000 tons being shipped via air and sea routes.
According to the MRTV report, Myanmar’s aquatic exports are categorized into three main groups: fish, prawns, and other aquatic products.
The fish category is generating over US$38M, the prawns category is bringing in over US$3M, and other aquatic products are contributing over US$300M.
Towards the end of last year, a Myanmar delegation, including the union minister and directors-general from the Department of Planning and the Livestock Breeding & Veterinary Department, left Yangon on September 13 to participate in a cooperation conference focused on import and export food safety for countries included in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
Additionally, they attended the China-ASEAN trade fair from September 14 to 17.
During these events, the delegation signed the Agreement on the Application of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures (SPS Agreement).
This agreement aims to facilitate the export of fishery products and farmed aquatic products to China, with a particular focus on those sourced from Myanmar’s natural waters
