UK – UK-based waste management business Biffa and drinks producer Nestlé Waters UK have announced a partnership to make Buxton bottles recycled and recyclable, helping accelerate the circular economy for plastics.

The partnership will mean that Nestlé Waters UK will be able to reduce the amount of virgin plastic in circulation. It also contributes to Biffa’s target of quadrupling its plastic recycling by 2030.

The rPET supplied to Nestlé Waters UK will be coming from the company’s plastic recycling facility in Durham, England. The plant can process the equivalent of 1.3 billion plastic bottles annually.

The new bottles will be made from 100% recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) by collecting recyclable bottles and reprocessing them in the UK.

It is only by working together, across the supply chain, that we can reduce our reliance on virgin plastics and bring an end to plastic pollution,” UK-based charity Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) strategic engagement manager Helen Bird said.

“Using recycled plastic in the manufacture of new plastic products and packaging is the whole point of recycling, and announcements like this help give confidence to the UK recycling industry to invest in new capacity so that we can keep even more plastic in use and out of the environment.”

Nestlé Waters is investing around £31 million (US431.63m) into its Buxton factory in an effort to boost capacity, improve distribution and reduce carbon emissions.

The investment includes a £26 million (US$33.24m) extension to the UK factory’s warehouse facility as it intends to bring distribution in house and £5 million (US$6.39m) into the construction of a new pipeline from a nearby natural mineral water source.

Nestlé claims the new 14,000 metre-squared facility will significantly reduce the need for external storage and will result in more efficient distribution delivery directly from the Buxton site.

By removing the need for transportation from the Buxton bottling plant to external warehouses, the company has estimated that it will cut its CO2 emissions by around 480 tonnes every year based on current volumes.

Meanwhile, Nestlé plans to connect its existing factory to the Rockhead spring at Cowdale Quarry – which it acquired in 2018 – with a 4.6km pipeline running underground.

Both projects aim to improve efficiency and optimise capacity at the site, as well as create sustainable growth opportunities. The latter will be conducted through careful management of water sources, storage and transportation which will in turn reduce carbon emissions.
