USA – Fresh Del Monte has introduced its Rubyglow pineapple to the United States, a fruit that comes with a price tag of USD 395.99 at Melissa’s Produce, a California-based seller of specialty fruit and veggies.
This unique pineapple, known for its deep red outer shell and exceptional sweetness, marks a significant entry into the luxury produce market.
The introduction of the Rubyglow pineapple in the U.S. comes at a time when the luxury fruit market is expanding. Despite recent economic concerns, including inflation and unemployment fears, there remains a segment of consumers willing to spend on premium produce.
Specialty fruits like Honeycrisp apples, Cotton Candy grapes, Sumo Citrus, and vertically grown Japanese strawberries have found a niche among American consumers who are eager to try new and exciting options.
“Americans have become increasingly interested in new fruit varieties in recent years,” van Rijswick noted. “They are ready to shell out for exciting new options.”
Targeting high-end consumers, the Rubyglow pineapple is marketed as a unique gift or a creative way to entertain guests. Its vibrant color and sweet flavor make it an eye-catching and delicious addition to any special occasion.
From China to the US
The Rubyglow pineapple made its debut earlier this year in China, where it received a warm reception. Fresh Del Monte decided to test the U.S. market’s appetite for this high-end fruit.
“Consumers are willing to pay for something that’s special,” said Cindy van Rijswick, fresh produce strategist for Rabobank’s global research team. “When it comes to specialty produce, there’s always a small market for higher-end restaurants, foodies, or certain online channels.”
Developing the Rubyglow pineapple was no small feat. Del Monte invested over 15 years into breeding this variety, which is a cross between a traditional pineapple and a Morada variety.
The result is a fruit with a striking appearance and a flavor profile that sets it apart from conventional pineapples.
Grown in Costa Rica, each Rubyglow pineapple takes two years to mature and naturally ripen on the plant before being harvested.
Melissa Mackay, Vice President of Marketing for Fresh Del Monte North America, highlighted the unique appeal of this fruit.
“Rubyglow is our latest showcase of innovation and leadership in this category with its bright red shell and sweet taste. It’s the ultimate exotic fruit, designed to impress.”
