Nigeria, Origin Tech Group partner in large-scale agricultural mechanization program

NIGERIA—The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has entered into a partnership with Origin Tech Group through the ‘Greener Hope Agricultural Productivity Program’ to enhance agricultural production in Nigeria.

Abubakar Kyari, Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, revealed that the ambitious program will develop integrated food security systems that combine food production, logistics, and market hubs across 150,000 hectares across Nigeria.

Implementation is set to begin in the 2024 dry season. The Minister predicted the program would start achieving its objectives within the first three years.

The program will also establish the Agro-Development Syndicated Facility, which was approved by Nigeria’s Federal Executive Council, to increase food production by a million tons and farmers’ earnings by 100%.

The Minister also revealed that the program will create around 1.5 million jobs and reduce food prices by 25% in the next ten years.

He said, “It will provide irrigation equipment, mechanisation equipment and land clearing for large farms ranging from a minimum of 2,000 hectares to a maximum of 25,000 hectares per cluster. The initiative is a truly Nigeria’s pioneering integrated food security system to be carried out through the  revolutionary large-scale agricultural mechanisation programme.”

Origin Tech Group, a multinational agri-tech firm, will provide home-grown technological solutions required to implement the program, especially the Agro-Development Syndicated Facility. It will also provide machinery and technological solutions to the various mechanization hubs throughout the country.

The Minister hailed Origin Tech Group, saying, “With a proven track record of successful partnerships and market development, Origin Tech Group will oversee this initiative, which aims to establish mechanisation hubs nationwide, boosting the agricultural sector’s contribution to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).”

President Bola Tinubu also hailed the program, which he described as an important project of his administration. He stressed the government’s commitment to protecting local agricultural production and food security.

President Tinubu said, “The Greener Hope Agricultural Productivity Programme is a crucial platform for addressing Nigeria’s agricultural mechanization challenges. My administration remains committed to food security and local industry protection.”

The President particularly praised the project for facilitating the deployment of advanced agricultural technology and machinery to enhance the country’s agriculture value chain.
