Nigeria’s largest Noiler hatchery opens in Oyo State, to produce 2.5 million chicks monthly

NIGERIA – A new Noiler hatchery has been launched in Awe, Oyo State, with the capacity to produce over 2.5 million day-old chicks each month.

The facility is expected to increase access to Noiler chickens, a breed used for both meat and egg production, making poultry farming more accessible to smallholder farmers and improving nutrition across the country.

Noiler Hatchery is a program by Amo Farm Sieberer Hatchery Ltd. (AFSH) in Nigeria that breeds and sells Noiler chickens.

Noilers are a dual-purpose chicken breed that can be raised for both meat and eggs.

During the commissioning event, Dr. Anand Burra, Managing Director, highlighted that the hatchery would provide poultry farmers with high-quality chicks, helping them improve their production and earnings.

Group Managing Director Dr. Ayoola Oduntan stressed the importance of maintaining strict quality control, stating that every chick produced must meet the company’s standards.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Dr. Oduntan marked the official opening, after which attendees toured the facility to observe the modern equipment and processes used in chick production.

Several industry stakeholders were present, including Dr. Sunil, General Manager of Amo Farm; Mr. Emmanuel Oloruntoba, Director of Supply Chain; Mr. Olusegun Akande, Head of Internal Audit; and Mr. Victor Alabi, HR Business Partner at Amo Farm.

Their presence reflected the significance of the project, which is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s poultry industry and contribute to food security.

Poultry Industry Overview

Nigeria’s poultry sector consists of approximately 180 million birds, distributed across different farming systems.

About 80 million birds are raised in extensive systems, 60 million in semi-intensive systems, and 40 million in intensive operations.

The country produces around 454,000 metric tons of poultry meat annually, supporting local consumption and commercial farming.

Egg production stands at approximately 3.8 million units per year, making poultry farming a key component of Nigeria’s agricultural economy.

Per capita consumption of poultry products remains low, with Nigerians consuming an average of 3.5 kilograms of eggs and 2.5 kilograms of meat per person per year.

Despite this, the poultry industry is valued at approximately US$4.2 billion (₦6.4 trillion), indicating its economic importance.
