NIGERIA – Governor Mohammed Umaru-Bago of Niger State has revealed plans for the construction of a poultry farm worth US$2 million in Bosso Local Government Area (LGA).
The governor made the announcement on Friday during a visit to Maikunkele, the headquarters of Bosso, where he engaged with local stakeholders as part of his statewide project monitoring tour.
According to Umaru-Bago, the poultry farm is a key component of the federal government’s livestock development initiative, with Niger State serving as a pilot for the project.
Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba emphasized the importance of ongoing support from the people of Bosso LGA and reassured them of the Bago-led administration’s dedication to fulfilling their needs.
Mr. Musa praised the governor, highlighting that the administration has prioritized the welfare of Bosso’s residents, particularly through its agricultural policies.
He added that Bosso LGA has been designated as a Special Agro-industrial Processing Zone, aiming to generate both direct and indirect job opportunities for the area.
In a similar vein, Mr. Kure announced his commitment to supporting the government’s initiatives with a contribution of N1 billion (approximately US$1.3 million), which will go towards providing fertilizers and other essential farm inputs to local farmers.
The announcement of the poultry farm comes amid growing demand for meat in Nigeria, where national meat consumption is estimated at 1.5 million metric tons per year, translating to roughly 7.3 kilograms per person, below the global average.
Statistics from 2021 show that Nigerians consumed an average of 1.13 kg of poultry meat per person, reflecting a 2.59% decline from the previous year.
Nigeria’s annual poultry consumption stands at approximately 400,000 metric tons, with consumption showing a slight decrease since 2017.
