NORWAY – Nova Sea AS, one of the largest producers of farmed salmon in Northern Norway, has announced a groundbreaking partnership with FishGlobe AS to develop the FishGlobe 30K, the largest version of FishGlobe’s closed farming system.
This collaboration also involves North Salmon Service, which will assume control of two of Nova Sea’s development licenses.
Tor Hellestøl, CEO of FishGlobe, expressed his excitement about the partnership, stating, “We are immensely proud to have a respected company like Nova Sea join us in this venture. This is a truly Norwegian project, combining farming expertise from Nordland, advanced technology from Rogaland, construction in Eastern Norway, and contributions from suppliers across the coast.”
Echoing this enthusiasm, Nova Sea’s CEO, Tom Eirik Aasjord, highlighted the importance of innovation in fish farming. “Our aim is to produce the healthiest farmed fish in the country with the highest survival rates.”
The FishGlobe 30K innovative floating globes are designed to prevent sea lice infestation and minimize fish escapes.
The earlier model, a 3.5K post-smolt globe, had a capacity of 3,500 cubic meters – the new FishGlobe 30K will be nearly ten times larger, with a capacity of 30,000 cubic meters.
FishGlobe has already tested smaller versions of this technology, and Nova Sea is set to trial full-scale food fish production.
Additionally, Nova Sea plans to explore the benefits of reduced sea production time by keeping the salmon in a closed environment during the initial sea phase.
In a related development, Nova Sea signed a NOK 673 million (US$63M) contract with Consto in March to construct a new salmon slaughterhouse in Lovund, Nordland, marking another major investment in the region’s aquaculture infrastructure.
