Onix Orange takes top spot at Fruit Logistica 2025

GERMANY – The Onix orange from AMFRESH has been crowned the winner of the Fruit Logistica Innovation Award (FLIA) 2025, capturing the attention of trade visitors with its striking appearance and resilience.

The citrus fruit emerged as the standout entry in this year’s competition, receiving an overwhelming share of the votes.

The Onix orange, described by the FLIA committee as “characterized by its beauty, versatility, and resilience,” outperformed other contenders in the category.

With its deep orange hue and high juice content, the fruit is designed to appeal to both consumers and producers. The ability to maintain freshness for extended periods makes it particularly attractive for global supply chains.

AMFRESH, a company known for innovation in fruit breeding, expressed gratitude for the recognition. “We are honored that the industry has embraced the Onix orange,” said a spokesperson for the company.

“Our focus has always been on creating high-quality produce that meets consumer expectations while ensuring sustainability in agriculture.”

Fruit Logistica 2025 was not just about awarding top produce—it also showcased how technology and artificial intelligence are shaping the agricultural sector.

Patrick Kelly, founder of Aglife Media, Inc. and host of The Produce Industry Podcast, emphasized the role of digital tools in marketing and supply chain management. “Digital innovations redefine the supply chain,” he said during his session at the Fresh Produce Forum.

“The digital world is changing communication, marketing, and advertising, and we need to think broadly to reach different markets.”

Federico Tavares, head of international fruit trade at the American Crown Global Corporation/UGBP USA, echoed these sentiments.

He pointed out that data platforms such as the Observatory of Economic Complexity (OEC) have become essential for tracking market trends and improving efficiency.

He also cited an example from Brazil, where papaya farmers use management systems to track fruit from harvest to final delivery. “Producers need digital solutions that eliminate manual data input and improve transparency between suppliers and customers,” he said.

Another key focus at the event was the use of artificial intelligence in pest control. Entomologist Dr. Silvia Schmidt introduced AI-powered sensor traps that help reduce reliance on insecticides. “With the help of high-resolution images in the traps, real-time monitoring and identification of species can save labor and improve efficiency,” she explained.

“Knowing the perfect timing for treatment could minimize crop losses, reduce chemical residues in products, cut production costs, and lower CO2 emissions.”

Beehero, a company specializing in pollination technology, demonstrated how IoT sensors installed in beehives provide insights into bee activity. Vice President Eytan Schwartz explained, “Our sensors translate the buzzing of bees into information, like Google Translate, allowing us to understand hive conditions in real time.”

The company’s Pollination Insight Platform (PIP) enables farmers to monitor where and what the bees are pollinating.

The FLIA Technology Award was also presented at the event, with Fermata winning for its Croptimus image analysis technology. This innovation allows for early detection of diseases and pests in greenhouses, reducing the need for chemical treatments.

Fruit Logistica 2025 highlighted how advancements in agricultural technology are making farming more efficient. With AI-driven solutions and new varieties like the Onix orange leading the way, the fresh produce industry continues to adapt to the demands of modern markets.
