SWITZERLAND – Swiss food tech company Planted is expanding its plant-based fermented steak product to a global audience after launching in France.
The company’s steak alternative is made from a blend of soy, rapeseed oil, beans, rice, and a proprietary microbial culture mix.
After its initial launch across European food service outlets, the steak became available in retailers in Switzerland and Germany.
Planted has now introduced the product to French restaurants and select supermarkets.
The steak is modelled after a beef loin cut and uses plant-based ingredients such as soy, beans, and rapeseed oil combined with a unique microbial culture blend.
Planted is part of a growing list of companies utilising fermentation in the production of alternative proteins.
Other notable players in the “whole cut” meat substitute space include Juicy Marbles, Chunk Foods, Meati Foods, and Umami.
The company promotes its steak product as being rich in protein and fiber, while low in saturated fats.
It also contains iron and vitamin B12.
According to Planted, this product, named “planted.steak,” is a first in the market, offering a beef loin-style steak made entirely from plant-based ingredients.
Pascal Bieri, co-founder of Planted, revealed that the development process involved collaboration with over 50 professionals from the gastronomy sector.
Planted plans to showcase the steak at the 60th anniversary of SIAL Paris in October, a biannual food industry event described as the largest of its kind globally.
This international debut aims to broaden the product’s reach in Europe.
The expansion comes as plant-based meat consumption continues to rise.
The European plant-based meat market, valued at US$2.1 billion in 2023, is projected to grow at a compound annual rate of 20.4% through 2030.
Meanwhile, the global meat substitute market is expected to reach a volume of 343.2 million kilograms by 2029, with a 5.8% growth rate projected for 2025.
