SOUTH AFRICA – South African agri-food giant RCL Foods has successfully spun off its poultry production operations, resulting in the independent listing of Rainbow Chicken on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) on June 26, 2024.

The initial public offering (IPO) involved the issuance of 890.3 million shares at a unit price of R2.85, approximately US$0.16 per share.

Rainbow Chicken, a prominent name in South African poultry production, has been under the control of Remgro, the investment vehicle of billionaire Johann Rupert.

This restructuring aims to ensure sustainable profitability for RCL Foods by focusing on its core competencies and allowing Rainbow Chicken to establish itself as a standalone entity in the market.

Becoming an independent entity is a significant milestone for our company, positioning us uniquely and competitively in the industry,” stated Marthinus Stander, Managing Director of Rainbow Chicken, in an official release by the JSE.

The origins of Rainbow Chicken trace back to 1960 when it was founded as a modest family-run business.

Over the decades, it has evolved into South Africa’s largest poultry producer, boasting a revenue of R13.4 billion ($734.31 million) in 2023.

The company’s extensive operations include 165 farms, 1,288 poultry houses, eight hatcheries, three primary processing facilities, and two secondary processing plants focused on higher value-added products.

Additionally, Rainbow Chicken operates six animal feed plants and holds a 50% stake in a business managing two waste recovery plants.

This strategic spin-off allows Rainbow Chicken to concentrate solely on its poultry production, leveraging its established infrastructure and market presence to enhance its competitive edge.

The move is anticipated to drive innovation and efficiency within the company, benefiting both stakeholders and consumers in the long run.

As Rainbow Chicken steps into its new phase as an independent entity, it remains dedicated to maintaining its legacy of quality and leadership in the poultry industry.
