EUROPE – European food-tech start-ups Revo Foods from Austria and Paleo from Belgium have announced a collaborative effort to create plant-based salmon products featuring precision-fermented myoglobin, supported by US$2.35 million in EU funding.

The partnership aims to leverage the animal-free fermentation expertise of Belgian company Paleo to produce myoglobin, a protein typically sourced from animals that contributes significantly to meat’s flavor, texture, and nutritional profile.

Both companies have been active this year, with Austria-based Revo Foods rolling out new products and upgrades.

Earlier in the year, Revo introduced an updated version of its Revo Salmon Smokey Slices, a plant-based smoked salmon alternative made primarily from pea protein.

The Smokey Slices are offered in two variations: Smokey Style and Dill & Lemon Style.

The latest Smokey Slices formula has been enhanced for better bioavailability, allowing for easier protein absorption.

The ingredients include microalgae oils rich in DHA and EPA, high-quality pea proteins, and sea salt to deliver a fresh taste.

In addition to proteins, the product is enriched with dietary fibers and vitamins, such as Vitamin E, B12, and B6.

Revo Foods reports that the omega-3 fatty acid content in this plant-based salmon is higher than in some farmed salmon, and a 100-gram serving provides half the recommended daily Vitamin E intake.

The Revo-Paleo partnership comes as Europe’s plant-based food sector experiences robust growth.

The European plant-based food market reached US$6.2 billion in 2022, up from US$5.1 billion in 2020, marking a 21% rise in value and unit sales over two years.

Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom lead in revenue within this segment, with Germany’s plant-based food sales totaling US$2.35 billion in 2023.

While the EU saw a 21% increase in plant-based meat sales, conventional meat sales declined by 8%.
