KENYA – Rio Fish Ltd has embarked on a collaborative venture with the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI), Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) students, and Boston University to conduct a comprehensive hands-on sampling exercise at their farm.

This partnership aims to advance research, nurture young talent, and spearhead innovation in sustainable aquaculture.

Rio Fish Ltd, a social enterprise, is dedicated to boosting sustainable livelihoods and enhancing food security by strengthening aquaculture market systems around Lake Victoria.

Through its aquaculture practices, the company ensures a consistent supply of nutrient-rich fish and provides stable livelihoods for local fish farmers.

Notably, Rio Fish Ltd actively supports women fish farmers, who have been disproportionately affected by the decline in wild-caught fish supplies, by connecting them with economic opportunities.

The company is currently constructing a central market in Kisumu, which will serve as a central aggregation point for fish products.

This new facility is expected to reach over one million consumers in Kisumu and stands as a replicable model for the broader Lake Victoria region.

Leveraging technology to enhance its operations and build a stronger community, Rio Fish Ltd has introduced the RIO FISH mobile app.

This app links fish production to women fish farmers and connects directly with consumers.

Through this technology, fish farmers can manage their farms more efficiently and gain better market access.

Additionally, the app monitors fish growth over time, and aquaculture technology is used to optimize tilapia production.

Situated in Kenya, Rio Fish Ltd aims to capitalize on the country’s well-established fishing industry.

In 2022, Kenya’s fisheries production was estimated at approximately 173.6 thousand metric tons, with freshwater fish contributing 141.4 thousand metric tons and marine sources accounting for around 32 thousand metric tons.
