KENYA – Rio Fish Limited is collaborating with the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI) in efforts to advance sustainable aquaculture and support Kenya’s Blue Economy.
This partnership focuses on utilizing KMFRI’s expertise in marine and freshwater systems, aligning with Rio Fish’s commitment to eco-friendly fish farming practices.
Together, the two organizations are working on various projects aimed at enhancing food security and promoting climate-smart technologies in fish farming.
The initiative marks a new step forward for Rio Fish in its drive to implement more sustainable practices.
Recently, Rio Fish Limited also teamed up with Sustainable Inclusive Business Kenya (SIB-K), an arm of the Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA), to launch a biogas plant pilot project in Migori County.
The project is part of the Sustainable Manufacturing and Environmental Pollution (SMEP) Programme, which seeks to convert fish waste into biogas.
The initiative is supported by a grant from the UK Government, through UK International Development.
By converting fish waste into biogas, Rio Fish is working to improve its operational efficiency while fostering gender equality within its farm operations.
SIB-K officials have already visited Rio Fish’s processing unit in Migori County to monitor the progress of this collaboration.
Rio Fish, a for-profit company, emphasizes sustainable fish farming practices while empowering women and youth.
Its innovative approach to transforming Kenya’s fish industry has gained strong support from various stakeholders.
Earlier this year, Rio Fish, alongside Great Lakes Feeds, received grants from the Investing in Women in the Blue Economy in Kenya (IIW-BEK) program.
Both companies were awarded KES 56 million (US$384,000) to advance their goals.
The IIW-BEK initiative, funded by Global Affairs Canada and managed by the African Enterprise Challenge Fund (AECF), aims to reduce gender disparities in Kenya’s Blue Economy and support women-owned businesses.
The overall program plans to assist 110 women-led enterprises to foster job creation and entrepreneurial development.
Under the leadership of CEO and co-founder Angela Odero, Rio Fish continues to focus on women’s empowerment and sustainable practices within the aquaculture sector.
