SOUTH AFRICA – Heineken’s Savanna Premium Cider has achieved a historic milestone by being ranked the No.1 cider brand in the world by volume, according to the IWSR (International Wine and Spirits Research) Global Cider Report.
This marks the first time a South African brand has claimed the top cider spot globally.
Founded in 1996, Savanna has consistently prided itself on its unique heritage and unwavering commitment to quality.
The brand’s popularity has soared, with volume more than doubling over the past five years due to significant consumer demand.
“We are so proud of this achievement,” said Kayla Hendricks, Senior Brand Manager at Savanna. “South Africans have a real knack for making No.1s, and now, another local No.1 to celebrate. Here’s to you, the fans of Savivi. Thanks for making Savanna your No.1 cider, and the world’s too.”
Heineken acquired Distell Group Holdings Limited and Namibia Breweries to form Heineken Beverages in 2023, aiming to expand its footprint across the African continent.
Distell is South Africa and Africa’s leading producer and marketer of wines, spirits, ciders, and other ready-to-drink beverages, with products sold worldwide.
Earlier this year, Heineken Beverages announced an R2.3 billion (US$122.93M) investment in its returnable bottling program in South Africa.
This initiative aims to more than double the share of returnable beer bottles in the market. The move aligns with Heineken’s global ambition of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2040.
The new 650ml returnable bottle, dubbed the “Star Bottle,” features the iconic Heineken star and has the Heineken name deep etched into the glass.
This innovation marks another significant step in Heineken’s commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.
