MYANMAR – Grain ingredients supplier Scoular has opened a new facility in Thilawa, Myanmar in an effort to expand its global fishmeal operations.

Scoular said the facility will provide a hub for high-quality, consistent product and just-in-time shipment to Asian feed markets.

The opening follows Scoular’s launch in September of Encompass, the new brand for Scoular’s growing global fishmeal business, which it has been part of for more than 20 years.

It also comes in the wake of an expanding fishmeal market driven by a spike in demand for protein-rich animal feed.

According to The Insight Partners study, the market was valued at US$ 8,153.6 million in 2020 and is projected to reach US$ 15,264.6 million by 2028.

It is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8.3% from 2021 to 2028 driven by rising industrial livestock production and increasing demand for protein-rich animal feed drive the market growth.

“We are excited to expand Scoular’s world-class fishmeal operations with an additional investment in Asia,” said Adrian Gasparian, managing director for Asia-Pacific for Scoular.

“The facility further expands Scoular’s supply of fishmeal and our ability to produce and deliver high-quality ingredients to our customers around the region.”

The new facility is also a key part of the Omaha, Nebraska, US-based Scoular’s growing presence in Asia.

The company recently expanded its regional headquarters in Singapore, soybean cleaning and distribution operations in Indonesia, and feedstuffs and grain distribution operations in Indonesia and Myanmar.

Apart from expanding in Asia, Scoular has also been ramping up its investments in North America to meet the rising demand for feedstuff.

In August last year, it announced it was investing with two partners in a US$12m fishmeal processing facility in Warrenton, Oregon, adding that it had broken ground on the new 14,400-square-foot site.

That facility will use local fish processing trimmings and will target both pet food and aquaculture manufacturers.

The first fishmeal production investment for Scoular in the US, the site is expected to be operational by the summer of 2022.

Scoular is also set to open a new US$13m US barley protein concentrate processing plant Jerome, south-central Idaho.

Idaho is the leading state for barley production in the US and Scoular also operates several grain handling facilities there, making the location ideal for the company’s new venture.
