TANZANIA – Serengeti Breweries Limited (SBL) has been awarded the prestigious ‘Top Alcoholic Manufacturer Award’ at the 2024 President’s Manufacturer of the Year Awards (PMAYA) in Tanzania.

The PMAYA awards, one of the highest honors for manufacturers in the country, celebrate excellence and innovation across industries.

SBL’s Managing Director, Obinna Anyalebechi, commended the dedication of the SBL team and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to quality and sustainability.

“We remain dedicated to maintaining standards of excellence that position SBL as a key player in the Tanzanian manufacturing landscape,” Anyalebechi said.

Tanzania’s Vice President, Philip Isdor Mpango highlighted the Tanzanian government’s commitment to improving infrastructure, including road and port facilities, to enhance the import and export process for goods essential to industrial success.

He urged local manufacturers to focus on producing more intermediate goods, aiming to reduce the country’s reliance on imports and strengthen local production.

A central part of SBL’s success has been its focus on local sourcing and agricultural investment. Currently, over 75 percent of raw materials used in SBL’s beer production are sourced from Tanzanian farmers, contributing to the local economy and strengthening agricultural supply chains.

By prioritizing local sourcing, SBL aims to empower rural communities, generate jobs, and promote sustainable farming practices.

This approach aligns with SBL’s broader mission of fostering economic growth and supporting Tanzania’s move towards greater self-sufficiency in essential manufacturing inputs.

Despite this success, SBL called for a supportive tax environment to sustain the growth of the brewing sector.

Anyalebechi stressed the need for a fair tax framework to help maintain industry stability and prevent price hikes, which can arise from high import duties and currency fluctuations.

He warned that excessive taxation could limit revenue potential, weaken competitiveness, and foster the growth of illicit alcohol production, posing a risk to public health and safety.
