Shoprite recalls cereal products over labelling inaccuracies

Customers who may have purchased these products are requested to return them to where they were purchased for a full refund.

SOUTH AFRICA – Shoprite, Checkers, Usave and OK Foods supermarkets have recalled all cereal products manufactured by Heartland Foods, due to inaccurate nutritional labelling by the supplier.

According to the manufacturer, the affected products “do not provide the nutritional benefits as claimed on the packaging.” Some products also contain slightly higher sugar levels than stated, posing a risk to diabetic individuals.

After identifying the defects, the manufacturer and suppliers notified the National Consumer Commission that they were recalling Heartland Foods cereal products.

The affected products include Corn Flakes (Morning Mills, Ubrand, Housebrand, Ritebrand, OK Foods), Bran Flakes (Morning Mills, Housebrand, Ritebrand), Muesli (Morning Mills, Ubrand) and Instant Oats (Morning Mills), Multi Grain Flakes (Heartlands), Crunchy Flakes (Heartlands), Wheaty Flakes (Heartlands), Granola (Heartlands), Corn Flakes (Heartlands) and Bran Flakes (Heartlands).

They were available at Shoprite, Checkers, USave, and OK Food Supermarkets nationwide and exported to Angola, Ghana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Swaziland, and Zambia.

While no complaints have been received, customers who may have purchased these products are requested to return them to their nearest supermarket for a full refund. Proof of purchase is not required, and opened products may be returned.

This recall in South Africa underscores the importance of accurate and adequate food labeling, a global challenge that could sometimes be fatal.

Undeclared pecan allergen in the US

For instance, on March 19th, 2025, in the US, Dessert Holdings issued an allergy alert regarding an undeclared tree nut allergen in Favorite Day™ Gourmet New York Style Cheesecake, 6oz/2ct.

The product mislabeling, resulting in undeclared pecans, poses a risk of life-threatening allergic reactions to people with pecan allergies or severe sensitivity. This was evident as the recall came after a customer complaint on 14 March 2025 alerted the company that the product contained pecans.

The impacted products were distributed between 14 February 2025 and 7 March 2025 to Target Distribution Centers in California, Florida, Iowa, Ohio, and Texas. They were packaged in clear plastic clamshells and sold in Target Stores.

Consumers who have purchased Target brand Favorite Day™ Gourmet New York Style Cheesecake 6oz/2ct, Lot code 25028A1 000039133 UPC 0 85239 09690 1 are advised not to consume the product and contact Target Guest Relations at (800) 444-0680 for a full refund.

Undeclared peanut allergen in Canada

In Canada, recent Canadian Food Inspection Agency test results triggered the recall of Habibi’s Mediterranean brand Hummus Lebanese Style due to undeclared peanuts, following a reported reaction linked to its consumption.

The recalled hummus is sold in 450-gram plastic tubs, marked with the UCP number 6 83830 00911 7, and expires on June 17.

According to the CFIA, they were distributed in Alberta, British Columbia, and possibly other provinces and territories.

Undeclared soya allergen in the UK

In the UK, Tesco has recalled various Tesco Free From Meal Kits due to undeclared soya, which is not listed on the label. This means the products are a possible health risk for anyone with a soy allergy.

The affected products are Tesco Free From Katsu Curry Meal Kit 250g, all date codes up to and including 12 December 2025, and Tesco Free From Sweet & Sour Meal Kit 250g, all date codes up to and including 19 May 2025.

The company has also issued a recall notice to its customers, explaining why the product is being recalled and giving them instructions on what to do if they bought it.
