US – Shuman Farms started the Vidalia onion shipping season with events involving Food Lion and Royal Food Service.
The Cobbtown, Georgia-based farm sent out its first shipment to grocery stores and wholesalers across the U.S. and Canada.
Food Lion stores in Vidalia, Statesboro, Metter, and Reidsville, Georgia, were among the first to receive shipments.
Customers were eager to purchase the seasonal Vidalia onions, known for their sweetness and mild flavor. Shuman Farms President and CEO John Shuman expressed his excitement, noting how the start of the season is anticipated by both the company and customers.
To mark the occasion, Shuman Farms held a season kickoff event in partnership with Georgia Southern University Athletics at a Food Lion location in Statesboro.
The event featured Georgia Southern University cheerleaders and their mascot, Gus, as well as giveaways including baseball tickets, Food Lion gift cards, and Shuman Farms merchandise.
In Atlanta, Royal Food Service began its Vidalia onion season on April 18 by unloading its first shipment of Shuman Farms onions.
This partnership highlights Shuman Farms’ commitment to providing quality produce and maintaining a strong farm-to-table story in the Southeast U.S.
Shuman Farms’ Vidalia onion season is set for a strong performance through September due to favorable growing conditions and the acquisition of Generation Farms in fall 2023. Shuman Farms anticipates a 30% increase in their Vidalia onion program’s capacity thanks to this addition.
“We have expanded our Vidalia onion program and improved our facilities for better packing and storage,” said Shuman.
These advancements will enable the company to continue distributing Vidalia onions through Labor Day, supporting its partners’ needs.
