SIG partners with local firms to launch Egypt’s first end-to-end recycling system for beverage cartons

The initiative aims to reshape the country’s recycling landscape by turning waste into valuable resources.

EGYPT – Packaging solutions provider SIG has joined forces with Plastic Bank, Carta Misr, and TileGreen to launch Egypt’s first comprehensive recycling framework for used aseptic beverage cartons.

The initiative aims to reshape the country’s recycling landscape by turning waste into valuable resources while promoting circular economy principles.

Currently, Egypt lacks a formal system for collecting and recycling waste. This new collaborative effort addresses every stage of the recycling process—from collection to reuse—by building a transparent and scalable infrastructure.

Plastic Bank leads the collection of used beverage cartons, using a blockchain-secured platform to ensure full traceability and transparency.

This technology empowers waste collectors by converting each collected item into traceable revenue, creating stable income opportunities.

Once collected, the cartons are processed by Carta Misr, a local paper mill that separates the paper fibers from the aluminum and polymer (PolyAl) layers. The recovered fibers are then repurposed into high-quality recycled paper products.

The remaining PolyAl mix is handed off to TileGreen, an Egyptian startup that transforms it into durable interlocking bricks using patented technology—providing a sustainable alternative for the construction sector.

“With this strong partner network, we ensure that every component of used beverage cartons can be recycled—avoiding landfill and advancing a circular economy in Egypt,” said Abdelghany Eladib, President & General Manager India, Middle East and Africa at SIG.

“This initiative reflects our commitment to creating economic, social, and environmental value, and shows how collaboration can scale sustainable solutions.”

The program also serves as a model for industry-led innovation, offering tangible environmental gains while creating new economic pathways for local communities.

By integrating recycled materials into everyday products—like roof tiles and building bricks—it raises public awareness and encourages greater participation in recycling efforts.

“Used beverage cartons are a rich source of high-quality fiber,” said Mohammed Gamal, CEO of Carta Misr.

“By integrating these fibers into our production, we reduce reliance on virgin materials and strengthen the recycling value chain—achieving both economic and environmental benefits.

Khaled Raafat, CTO & Co-founder at TileGreen, added, “We’re passionate about turning waste into value. Our partnership with SIG demonstrates how innovation in recycling can yield scalable solutions for industries like construction, while keeping waste out of landfills.”
