Singapore approves import of poultry meat, egg products from Vietnam

Vietnam has gained access to Singapore’s market for heat-processed poultry and eggs. Livestock exports from Vietnam are set to increase with the new market opening.

SINGAPORE – Vietnamese Trade Counselor to Singapore, Cao Xuan Thang, has announced that the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has approved the import of selected poultry meat and egg products from Vietnam.

The SFA’s official approval, issued on March 11, includes heat-processed poultry meat from companies CPV Food Co. Ltd and MeatDeli HN Co. Ltd, along with canned and sterilized poultry eggs and meat (excluding beef).

This decision marks an important step in agricultural trade relations between Vietnam and Singapore, aligning with their commitment to facilitating the exchange of animal-based food products.

The agreement follows high-level visits from the leadership of both countries earlier this year, including a visit by Party General Secretary To Lam to Singapore and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s trip to Vietnam in March.

Vietnam’s successful entry into the Singaporean market is expected to provide a significant boost to its livestock product exports, which reached over US$533 million (in 2023), an increase of 6.5% from the previous year.

As of 2024, Singapore imported more than US$2.88 billion worth of poultry meat and eggs, reflecting the country’s heavy reliance on food imports, with over 90% of its food consumed being sourced from abroad.

In fact, Singapore’s poultry supply is predominantly imported from countries like Brazil, the United States, Thailand, and Malaysia, with Malaysia accounting for a major share of the market.

Vietnam’s products will join a diverse pool of imports, which also include poultry from countries such as Denmark, Thailand, and the U.S. Singapore is also taking steps to diversify its egg supply, sourcing eggs from various nations including Thailand, Australia, and Spain, in addition to its largest supplier, Malaysia.

For Vietnam to expand the range of companies eligible to export these products, it must follow the SFA’s prelisting procedure.

Thang emphasized that Vietnamese industry associations and businesses must stay updated on Singapore’s regulations and focus on promotional activities to successfully navigate this new market.

This new development comes at a time when Singapore is working to balance its food security concerns, particularly with its dependency on imports.
