USA – Bruvi, a revolutionary new single-serve system, has secured US$2.2 million in seed round funding to develop a next generation single-serve coffee system that can be connected to mobile devices and serve eco-friendly pods.

The Los Angeles-based startup, which didn’t name the investors for the seed round, said it will use the funds primarily for manufacturing capital investment as it works toward a national launch in the third quarter next year.

The latest funding round adds to Bruvi’s previous raise of US$950,000 in pre-seed funding in 2019.

Bruvi has developed a “smart” single-serve coffee system that can be connected to a mobile app and is Wi-Fi enabled. Consumers can brew remotely, auto order pods and access a user dashboard of consumption patterns.

“Bruvi is first and foremost, a coffee company. Our mission is to upgrade the at-home coffee experience, with breakthrough brewing technology, better coffee and more eco-consciousness along with the convenience of single-serve.”

Bruvi’s coffee maker can brew filter coffee, espresso, Americanos, iced coffee, infused coffee and tea, in addition to the world’s first cold brew from a single-serve system. The company’s B-Pods coffee pods will offer ethical and sustainably sourced coffee as well as those from licensed brand partners.

Founded in 2018, Bruvi was founded by Sung Oh, a former engineer and patent attorney, and Mel Elias, former chief executive of the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf.

“2020 is a challenging year, yet investors agreed that Bruvi is perfectly positioned for success as consumers increasingly look to drink more and better coffee at home,” Elias said in a statement.

“Bruvi is first and foremost, a coffee company. Our mission is to upgrade the at-home coffee experience, with breakthrough brewing technology, better coffee and more eco-consciousness along with the convenience of single-serve.”

Bruvi said the single-serve coffee industry is currently a US$6 billion market with near term potential for 2.5-times growth. Coffee is America’s favorite beverage, with eight out of 10 cups consumed at home.

A single-serve coffee container is a method for coffee brewing that prepares only enough coffee for a single portion.

Single-serve coffee containers can both reduce the time needed to brew coffee and simplify the brewing process by eliminating the need to measure out portions, flavorings, and additives from large bulk containers.

They can also help to keep the unused product fresher by individually packaging portions separately without exposing the entire supply batch to air and light.

Paper coffee pods can be functionally identical to plastic and metal coffee capsules, if the paper pods are individually sealed in separate bags. At the same time, the disposable single-use products add to the global waste production.
