EUROPE – The Netherlands-based company Solynta has signed an agreement with Pieterpik, a leading European seed supplier, to distribute its true potato seeds across the European Union.
This deal will allow home gardeners in the region to grow hybrid potatoes using high-quality true potato seeds developed through Solynta’s advanced breeding technology.
According to a company statement, this collaboration will make Solynta’s hybrid true potato seeds accessible to the consumer market through Pieterpik’s extensive distribution network.
Pieterpik will market and sell the seeds under its established brands, ensuring availability in garden stores, supermarkets, and do-it-yourself shops across the EU. Additionally, packaging businesses will have the option to purchase these seeds in bulk.
“By joining forces, the companies will work together to supply garden seeds intended for the consumer market throughout the EU. This will allow home gardeners to grow new hybrid potatoes from quality true potato seeds,” the company announcement stated.
“With hybrid true potato seeds produced through Solynta’s non-GMO breeding technology, home gardeners can grow the latest potato varieties from true potato seeds.”
The seeds will be presented in pictorial seed sachets, making them convenient for home gardeners. Pieterpik introduced the authentic potato seeds at IPM Essen, the world’s leading horticulture trade fair, held in Germany from January 28 to 31.
Pieterpik’s Managing Director, Bas Doorten, emphasized the potential of hybrid true potato seeds for home gardening. “Potato seeds are the very latest addition to our assortment of seeds. We see great potential in hybrid true potato seeds.”
According to Doorten, it’s a new, exciting way to grow delicious potatoes in gardens, just like any other vegetable grown from seed. Therefore, in his view, true potato seeds fit perfectly in their current vegetable seed portfolio.
“Besides the fact that it is very fulfilling to be able to harvest your table potatoes from your backyard, consumers can also enjoy their great ornamental value. Depending on the variety of potato seeds, they will have purple or white flowers that will perk up every backyard or balcony. We are excited to introduce these new products to our customers around Europe,” Doorten said.
Xarain van Os, Solynta’s Business Development Manager, highlighted the significance of this partnership in expanding the reach of Solynta’s innovation. “At Solynta, we are rapidly expanding our commercial activities around the world. Our primary focus is on adding new, robust varieties to the professional market and open-field application by potato growers.”
This collaboration allows Solynta to introduce their innovation in the consumer market. Pieterpik has over 120 years of experience in this specific market. It is also a great opportunity for home growers to enjoy hybrid potato innovation in their gardens.
“From now on, everyone can grow their potatoes from true seeds and enjoy eating the fruits of their efforts!” van Os stated.
Global expansion and recent developments
Solynta produces true potato seeds in its Netherlands-based greenhouses, where it develops new varieties using natural hybrid breeding methods.
These seeds provide several advantages over traditional seed tubers, including being free from diseases, having a longer shelf life, and being easier to store and transport.
The ability to scale production quickly also makes them a valuable alternative for both home and professional growers.
The company has been expanding its reach beyond Europe. A few months ago, Solynta partnered with Bayer to distribute true potato seeds in Kenya and India.
This initiative is expected to benefit smallholder farmers by providing them with reliable, disease-free planting material. Additionally, Solynta’s true potato seeds are now available in several global markets, strengthening their position in the industry.
