SOUTH AFRICA – South African Breweries (SAB), a subsidiary of beverage giant AB InBev, has outlined the significant impact of its SAB Sharp initiative, a platform dedicated to fostering a culture of responsibility within South African communities.
With a compliance rate of 78 percent among traders and retailers, SAB is optimistic about the positive outcomes of this initiative.
SAB Sharp, a collaboration with law enforcement agencies, government, and the liquor trading industry, has been instrumental in encouraging responsible beer drinking across South Africa.
The initiative followed a nationwide compliance assessment of over 32,000 retailers, ensuring adherence to responsible practices and promoting responsible consumption among consumers.
The SAB Sharp platform is structured around four key pillars: Live Sharp, aimed at empowering responsible communities; Drive Sharp, focused on responsible driving; Talk Sharp, promoting responsible marketing; and Sell Sharp, enhancing responsible trading.
This evidence-based initiative is built on comprehensive research and global best practices, with regular reviews and significant input from stakeholders.
A major component of SAB Sharp is its support for law enforcement agencies, providing them with the necessary infrastructure, equipment, and knowledge to effectively perform their duties.
This support has led to the establishment of 28 alcohol evidence centres and resulted in over 18,000 arrests related to alcohol misuse.
Zoleka Lisa, Vice President of Corporate Affairs at SAB, said: “This platform is integrated into our business strategy and operations, reinforcing our ambition to grow the beer category responsibly.
We take pride in the impact and sustainable interventions that cultivate a culture of responsibility in South Africa, guaranteeing that every beer experience is a positive one.”
JMPD Superintendent Mike Botolo emphasized the benefits of the partnership between SAB and law enforcement, noting an increase in arrests of drunk drivers, which has deterred drinking and driving.
“SAB Sharp exemplifies how collaborative efforts can lead to impactful and sustainable solutions, setting a new benchmark for responsible behavior in our communities. We are encouraged and anticipate the future of this partnership,” he said.
As part of its commitment to promoting responsible drinking, SAB recently launched an updated SAB Sharp logo. This new logo is visible across all brands, reinforcing responsibility messaging.
During the first quarter of 2024, SAB reported double-digit top-and bottom-line growth with EBITDA margin expansion.
The company saw mid-teen revenue growth, driven by pricing actions and continued premiumisation. Volumes grew by mid-single digits, continuing to outperform the industry in total alcohol, beer, and beyond beer categories.
