SOUTH AFRICA – The 19th Cleaver Awards, sponsored by Freddy Hirsch and RMIS, have announced the top butcheries in South Africa for the 2023/2024 year.
This prestigious event highlights the dedication and excellence of the nation’s best butcheries, celebrating their outstanding performance across various categories.
The selection process for the awards began with public nominations, followed by rigorous audits of the top 100 nominated butcheries across South Africa.
This year’s winners were recognized in the four categories.
Three and Less Tills category honors one winner per province, where applicable, and a national winner.
More than Three Tills recognized exceptional butcheries with broader operations, this category celebrates both provincial winners and a national champion.
Meat Markets category focuses on excellence in hypermarkets and supermarkets, awarding one provincial and one national winner.
Main Markets (Township Areas) highlightsstandout performers in retail butcheries serving rural and township communities, this category acknowledges their vital role in local communities.
Winners in the Three and Less Tills category include Bluff Meat Supply, Cuyler Butchery, Fredilia Meat Welkom Park, and Lebombo Slaghuis.
In the Meat Markets category, winners included Food Lover’s Market, Oxford Freshmeat Waterfall, and Old Oak Spar.
New Categories and Enhanced Auditing Process
The 2023/2024 Cleaver Awards introduced significant changes, including new categories and a streamlined selection process.
One notable addition was the “Main Markets” category, which highlights retail butchers serving rural and township areas, emphasizing their crucial role in their communities.
This year’s streamlined selection process chose only one provincial winner per category, from which the national winners were determined.
This approach aimed to showcase the best regional talent on a national stage.
In contrast to previous years, the audits conducted by SAMIC this year were comprehensive, covering all aspects of the butcheries.
The evaluation included food safety, hygiene, value for money, and customer service, providing a thorough assessment of each butchery’s overall performance.
The 19th Cleaver Awards have set a new standard in recognizing and celebrating the best butcheries in South Africa, honoring those who consistently deliver exceptional quality and service to their customers.
