SOUTH AFRICA – Synercore, a South African food ingredient manufacturer, formulator and distributor to fast-moving consumer goods companies, has expanded its manufacturing and distribution capabilities with the launch of Cape Town dry blending facility and warehouse.

The new facility will allow Synercore to integrate, expand, improve supply chain sustainability and further diversify its service offering.

The expansion comes on the heels of the recent investment of ZAR 80 million from Norfund, the Norwegian Investment Fund for developing countries. The investment that was used for the acquisition of two companies, Impilo and Sizwe.

Impilo supplies soy flour to predominantly the baking, confectionary and culinary industries while Sizwe was established to extrude, roast, steam cook, pack and blend any type of grains in the baking, cereal, dairy and meat industries, both from GM or non-GM source.

Dr. Tertius Cilliers, CEO of Synercore, at the time said the acquisitions would expand capacity and improve efficiencies for the ingredient formulator as far as blending and manufacturing is concerned.

South Africa has a well-developed food sector, but many large food companies have traditionally preferred to source ingredients directly from overseas suppliers.

André Kemp, Investment Manager at Norfund underscored the importance of the investment to Synercore to enable it to become a core local producer of food ingredients, and thereby creating more highly skilled jobs, while strengthening food security, increasing product shelf life, thereby reducing food waste, and promoting import substitution.

Synercore has a strategy of investing in the future of the agricultural and food industries, attracting the best food formulators, product developers research and development and application specialists to also promote food safety and security on the African continent.

“By owning core ingredients in the baking and cereal industry, we believe Synercore will be able to formulate more tailored solutions to clients at the best price in the market, leading to further business development, that creates jobs and reduces imports”, said Kemp.

The company is in a distributor partnership with Italian based companies, Sacco, CSL & Caglificio Clerici S.p.A. in Southern Africa.

Sacco, CSL & Caglificio Clerici S.p.A. are leading manufacturers of probiotics, lactic acid bacteria, moulds, yeasts, enzymes and antimicrobials intended for the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, dairy, food and agro-livestock sectors.

Additionally, Synercore is a Distributor / Channel Partners of Futura Ingredients in Southern Africa. Futura Ingredients is a supplier of speciality and functional ingredients in the food and beverage industry, with its Ekömul and Ekölite product lines being recognised internationally.

In another significant achievement this year, and a demonstration of our unwavering commitment to food safety excellence, Synercore’s Allmark Foods production facility in Hermanstad have successfully been recertified as FSSC 22000 compliant.

This accomplishment follows the recent relocation and expansion of Synercore’s production facilities.
