Coca-Cola HBC expands coffee chain portfolio with acquisition of minority stake in Caffè Vergnano

ITALY – Swiss-based Coca-Cola anchor bottler Coca-Cola HBC has completed the acquisition of a 30% equity shareholding in premium Italian coffee company Casa del Caffè Vergnano, further expanding its presence in the coffee chain space.    Caffè Vergnano is one of the oldest coffee roasters in Italy with a premium, high-quality coffee that represents Italian heritage and authenticity.   The coffee chain’s portfolio includes traditional espresso in various blends, packages, and formats such as beans, roast, and ground coffee and single portioned pods.   According to a statement from Coca-Cola HBC,  the company sold approx. 7,000 tons of coffee in more than 90…

Italy’s Newlat Food to expand presence in UK with acquisition of branded meal and snack maker Symington

UK – Italian food company Newlat Food has agreed to purchase UK-based branded meal and snack manufacturer, Symington’s Group in an effort to consolidate its presence in the region.  Founded in 1827, Symington’s operates three production plants and one distribution centre across northern England  The company supplies branded and own-label foods including soups under the Mug Shot brand, Twistd couscous and rice-based meals, and Ragu pasta sauces.  Other brands in Symington’s portfolio include Naked instant noodles, The Hungry Elephant meal kits, and Chicken Tonight sauces – which are sold mainly in the UK, US and Australia.  The acquisition for a total consideration of £53 million (US$63 million) will see Newlat Food utilise Symington’s UK-wide distribution platform…

Apollo to buy 67% stake in Italian packaging firm Reno De Medici for US$430m

ITALY –  Apollo Global Management, a US-based investment fund, has agreed to acquire a 67% ownership stake in Reno De Medici (RDM) from its two principal shareholders, Cascades and Caisse de dépot et placement du Québec.   Apollo which made the acquisition for about US$430 million plans to launch a mandatory tender offer for the remaining shares, with the aim of delisting RDM.  RDM produces and distributes cardboard made from recycled fibers, which is mainly used for packaging and folding cartons in all product sectors including food.  The company recently purchased mills in Spain and entered into an agreement…
