SOUTH AFRICA – Tiger Brands, one of the largest processing companies in Africa, has recently inaugurated a cutting-edge peanut butter manufacturing plant for its renowned Black Cat brand in Krugersdorp, South Africa.
This development marks the most substantial capital investment ever undertaken by Tiger Brands within South Africa’s borders.
The grand opening event was graced by the presence of Tiger Brands CEO, Tjaart Kruger, alongside the Deputy Minister from the Department of Trade, Industry, and Competition (DTIC).
Transitioning from its previous location in Randfontein, Tiger Brands has allocated R300 million (US$ 16,163,700) towards the construction of the new facility.
This investment promises expanded floor space, enhanced peanut processing capabilities, and upgraded research and development facilities aimed at refining product quality.
The facility can churn out an average of one million jars of peanut butter monthly.
These products encompass the brand’s traditional peanut butter variety, consisting of 91% peanuts, sugar, salt, and stabilizers.
It will also produce the peanut butter variant with no sugar or salt, boasting a composition of 99% peanuts.
Black Cat peanut butter, introduced in 1926, has solidified its position as one of the top-selling brands in the market, with an impressive five million kilograms sold annually through formal retail channels.
Consumer surveys indicate that the nearly 100-year-old brand is a staple in seven out of ten South African households, equating to 10 million of the 15 million households that purchase peanut butter.
In 2023, Black Cat clinched the title of Coolest Peanut Butter Brand in South Africa’s Sunday Times GenNext Awards, further solidifying its status as an iconic brand.
It also emerged as the Overall Category Winner and received Iconic Brand recognition in the 2023/2024 AskAfrika survey.
