SOMALIA – The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) has introduced the “Breeding Broiler Production Project” in Somalia, aimed at decreasing the country’s reliance on imported chicken meat.

This project is a continuation of efforts started in 2020, under the “Project for Developing Layer Poultry Farming in Somalia,” a collaboration between TİKA and Zamzam University’s Anatolian Faculty of Agriculture.

As part of that earlier initiative, a poultry house and hatchery were established at the university. In 2023, further expansion took place with the creation of a Feed Production Center at City University’s Faculty of Agriculture in Mogadishu.

The latest phase of the program, the “Breeding Broiler Production Project,” focuses on improving domestic broiler production in Somalia.

It aims to boost self-sufficiency in chicken meat and support the broader livestock industry in the country.

In 2022, Somalia imported US$20 million worth of poultry meat, ranking as the 118th largest poultry importer globally.

Poultry meat was also the 49th most imported product in the country.

The primary sources of imported chicken were Brazil, supplying US$5.85 million, the United Arab Emirates with US$5.24 million, Turkey at US$4.78 million, the United States with US$2.14 million, and Ukraine contributing US$1.46 million.

Between 2021 and 2022, Turkey, Brazil, and the UAE saw the most significant growth in poultry exports to Somalia, with Turkey increasing by US$2.67 million, Brazil by US$2.13 million, and the UAE by US$1.59 million.

The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA), a department under Turkey’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, focuses on development cooperation in over 150 countries.

In Africa, this is just one of the multiple projects they have across Africa.

The company recently supported ongoing initiatives by supporting a fishermen’s cooperative in Niger.

The agency supplied essential equipment and machinery to the cooperative and carried out renovations to its building.

As part of its “Guichet Unique 3A” initiative, TİKA launched a project aimed at aiding the Tcharga Fisheries Cooperative.

This project addresses the requirements of fish farms overseen by Niger’s Ministry of Hydraulics, Sanitation, and Environment in the capital, Niamey, and surrounding areas.
