TOGO – The partnership between Togo and Morocco has yielded a semi-industrial plant for producing red oil and palm kernel oil in Tchékpo Dédékpoè, a town of the Yoto 2 municipality (70 km from Lomé) well-suited for growing red palm.
The project is funded through the Fonds Africain d’Appui à la Coopération Décentralisée Internationale (FACDI), is part of a strategic partnership with Tangier.
According to Agence Togolaise de Presse, a local media, the project officially began on November 5, 2024, and is expected to take three months.
The new facility aims to utilize renewable energy and biogas, contributing to a reduction in carbon emissions and enhancing the region’s energy resilience. It will help boost local resources, create jobs, and stimulate the economy.
The plant will feature a mini-solar power facility, a methanizer, and an integrated production system capable of initially producing 500 liters of oil per day, with potential for expansion based on local demand.
In other development, Momé Katihoé, a village in Vo, Southern Tog has received CFA60.4 million under WACA ResIP coastal resilience program to modernize palm processing.
A modern processing unit has been built under the initiative, equipping the village with mixers, motorized extractors, and a palm kernel oil press.
“In the past, kneading palm nuts was extremely difficult. We sometimes did it with our feet or in mortars, which made the work tedious,” explains Soutoji Komlan, president of the Development Committee of Momé Katihoé. “With this new equipment, work is easier and our women’s living conditions have improved considerably.”
Dodjomè Adjovi Reine, one of the project’s beneficiaries noted that it took them very long to make palm oil but with the equipment, they can now produce many 25-liter jerrycans, in just a day.
