Ugandan farmers and exporters will now have a faster route to the UK market as Uganda Airlines introduces direct flights to London Gatwick.
UGANDA – Uganda Airlines has announced the launch of direct flights from Entebbe International Airport to London Gatwick, a move expected to improve the export of Ugandan agricultural products, particularly bananas and vegetables, to the United Kingdom.
The flights, set to begin on May 18, 2025, mark the airline’s first direct connection to the UK and its third international destination outside Africa, following Dubai and Mumbai.
The launch was officiated by Uganda’s Minister for Works and Transport, Gen Katumba Wamala, who highlighted the economic advantages of the direct service.
“The direct connection will facilitate the swift movement of people, goods, and services. Exporters will benefit from shorter transit times and more efficient logistics. This will enhance Uganda’s exports and strengthen our economy,” he said.
For nearly a decade, Uganda had no direct air link to the UK after British Airways ceased operations to Entebbe in 2015.
Exporters had to rely on multiple layovers, increasing transit time and complicating the process of maintaining fresh produce. The new service, operated by the Airbus A330-800neo, will provide much-needed cargo space for perishable goods.
Boosting trade and economic ties
Uganda’s agricultural exports to the UK—including fresh produce such as bananas, vegetables, and coffee—are expected to benefit significantly from the direct flights.
In 2023, trade between Uganda and the UK was valued at £556 million (approximately US$19.6 million or KES 70 billion), with agricultural commodities comprising a major portion of this exchange.
The direct flights will help improve cold chain management, reduce spoilage, and ensure faster delivery to UK markets.
Lisa Chesney, the British High Commissioner to Uganda, underscored the importance of the route. “This flight is not just about convenience. It’s a strategic link between two economies. It will help Ugandan products like bananas and vegetables reach the UK faster and fresher, boosting trade volumes,” she said.
Uganda Airlines CEO Jennifer Bamuturaki noted that demand for direct flights between Uganda and the UK has been increasing. “This is more than a route; it’s a trade and investment lifeline. It will create opportunities for exporters and improve access to international markets for Uganda’s premium agricultural products,” she said.
The new London route brings Uganda Airlines’ destination count to 17 across 13 countries, reinforcing its international expansion efforts and commitment to supporting Uganda’s export-driven economy.
Additional development in regional air travel
The expansion of air transport in East Africa has been a growing focus for governments in the region. Kenya Airways has also been strengthening its long-haul routes, particularly in Europe and Asia, to enhance cargo and passenger movement.
Meanwhile, Rwanda’s national carrier, RwandAir, recently announced increased frequencies to major international hubs. These efforts indicate a broader push to improve connectivity and trade across Africa.
The direct Entebbe-London route stands as a crucial development in Uganda’s economic progress. By shortening travel times and providing reliable cargo capacity, the new flights offer Ugandan businesses a chance to strengthen their position in the UK market and beyond.
