UK – Recent data from the UK government highlights a significant downturn in the country’s meat production, marking the first decline in ten years.
According to the “Agriculture in the United Kingdom 2023” report meat production has dropped by 3.7% over the past year.
A closer examination of the statistics reveals that domestic pig farming has suffered the most, with pig numbers plunging by 10%, leaving a population of 4.7 million.
Beef production also experienced a reduction, with the beef herd declining by 3.8% to 1.4 million animals.
Additionally, the total number of cattle and calves has fallen by 0.8%, resulting in a current count of 9.6 million.
Poultry production has decreased by 2.9%, with the number of birds now at 178 million.
Similarly, sheep and lamb numbers have dropped by 4.1%, totaling 32 million animals.
The annual report, which offers a comprehensive overview of UK agriculture, also notes a slight reduction in the dairy herd, down 0.3% to 1.8 million.
Furthermore, the area dedicated to cereal crops has decreased by 2.7%, now covering 3.1 million hectares.
The report indicates a reduction in the agricultural workforce, which has decreased by 1.7% to 462,000 individuals.
Several factors contribute to these declines.
The report attributes the downturn to the economic repercussions of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which has significantly affected input prices for energy and fertilizers.
Persistent labor shortages in the industry have compounded these challenges.
The report also cites avian influenza and bovine tuberculosis as contributing factors.
The reduction in meat consumption has also played a role.
Government data reveals a 14% drop in per capita meat consumption between 2012 and 2022, influenced by changing consumer habits and rising prices.
