KENYA – Unga Farm Care, Kenya’s leading manufacturer and marketer of a broad range of quality animal nutrition and health products, has entered into a distribution deal with the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) to widely avail its products to the Kenyan farmers.

Unga Farm Care’s portfolio includes livestock feeds, cattle minerals, feed premixes and concentrates among others.

The partnership follows an outcry from farmers over an increase of fake animal feeds in the market that have impacted the productivity of their livestock, and the new partnership is aimed to address this.

Under the contractual agreement, NCPB, will open up its warehouses for distribution of the manufacturer’s products sold under the Fugo, Afya Bora, Viminera brands, among others.

“This partnership will enable us improve distribution of our range of products by taking a distribution point closer to our farmers.

“This will ensure consistent availability of our products to farmers in the region,” said Dickson Jawichre, General Manager Unga Farm Care.

This partnership is aligned to the agriculture hub model that NCPB is establishing under the new reforms established last year.

The hub seeks to provide a one-stop-shop for farmers to obtain agricultural inputs, farm machinery, agricultural advisory services, and post-harvest management services, among other services.

Last year, NCPB entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Safaricom’s DigiFarm Kenya Limited to enable small-scale farmers access information through the telco’s platform.

Under the MoU, the grain agency is offering post-harvest management services through the DigiFarm platform to farmers connected to the app, enabling them to access the board’s services at prevailing rates.

The recent move by Unga Farm Care, follows its partnership with Dutch animal nutrition and aquafeed company, Nutreco International B.V., alongside its sister company Unga Millers Limited in Uganda, forming a new joint venture.

The newly formed entity, Tunga Nutrition, targets to meet the demand for high-quality animal nutrition products in the East African region.

Tunga Nutrition Kenya seeks to increase production capacity at Unga Farm Care’s and Nutreco’s jointly owned fish feed plant in Nairobi to commercialize its products under the Skretting and Fugo brands.

Meanwhile Tunga Nutrition Uganda will make use of Unga Millers’ dormant flour mill in Kampala, converting it into a state-of-the-art feed mill producing animal feeds and concentrates. Its products will be sold under both Trouw Nutrition’s Hendrix and Unga’s Fugo Brands.

These recent partnerships are aimed to set Unga Group apart from its competitors and extend its dominance in the animal feed sector in East Africa region.
