Unilever announces plans to sell Unox, Zwan brands to Zwanenberg Food Group

UK – Unilever has announced it is in the process of selling its Unox and Zwan brands to Zwanenberg Food Group.

The two brands, which have been part of Unilever’s portfolio for decades, include the Dutch Unox brand, launched in 1937, and the Belgian Zwan brand, introduced in 1928.

This decision aligns with Unilever’s strategy to refine its Foods segment by focusing on larger, more scalable brands.

The company is emphasizing growth in categories like cooking aids, small meals, and condiments.

Products from Unox and Zwan, including various meat and soup items, require specialized supply chains and production techniques, which Unilever has determined are less compatible with its broader Foods portfolio.

However, certain Unox offerings, such as Noodles and Cup-a-Soup, will remain within the Unilever Foods lineup, fitting the company’s focus on mini meals.

Heiko Schipper, president of Unilever Foods, acknowledged the significance of the brands in their respective markets.

He described Unox as a cultural symbol in the Netherlands, noting its association with winter traditions like the New Year’s Dive in Scheveningen and ice-skating events.

The brand is also recognized for its orange hat logo and memorable advertising campaigns.

Regarding Zwan, Schipper highlighted its reputation in Belgium for quick and convenient meal options, stating that the brand has become a staple of everyday life in the country.

Zwanenberg Food Group CEO Sjoerd van der Laan expressed enthusiasm for the acquisition, emphasizing that it complements the company’s ambitions and portfolio.

Van der Laan also noted that the addition builds on the group’s previous purchase of Unilever’s factory in Oss, Netherlands, in 2018.

The transaction includes the Poznan facility, where soup-in-pouch products are manufactured.

Unilever confirmed that the deal remains subject to regulatory approvals, customary conditions, and consultation processes.

The agreement, which does not disclose financial details, is expected to be finalized by 2025.

This sale represents Unilever’s continued effort to streamline its business and focus on areas with greater long-term potential.
