Unilever, Department of Agriculture launch smallholder farmer programme in Jozini

The program reflects Unilever’s commitment to sustainability and inclusivity, while aligning with the government’s priorities of job creation.

SOUTH AFRICA – Unilever South Africa, a regional operator of the multinational Unilever, has partnered with the Department of Agriculture (DOA) to launch the Jozini Smallholder Farmer Programme to promote sustainability.

The programme, a partnership between Unilever, the Department of Agriculture (DOA), and the Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD), underscores the importance of public-private partnerships in driving socio-economic development and sustainability.

This initiative focuses on cultivating herbs and spices in the Jozini area, leveraging local resources and knowledge to create a sustainable supply chain while benefiting the local community economically and socially.

Justin Apsey, CEO of Unilever South Africa, said, “We are proud to support the Jozini Smallholder Farmer Programme, which aligns with our commitment to sustainability and empowering local communities.

“This initiative will improve smallholder farmers’ livelihoods and contribute to a more sustainable agricultural sector. This capacity-building initiative empowers and alleviates unemployment while providing a decent life in the heart of KwaZulu-Natal.”

Designed to enhance the skills of 100 smallholder farmers from villages within Ndumo, Makhane, Mahlabeni, and other areas, the programme focuses on training farmers to become suppliers for Unilever’s supplier localisation programme, with an uptake agreement for their produce.

Zinhle Manzini, a smallholder farmer from Jozini, highlighted the valuable skills she acquired through the programme, including crop care, soil preparation, and identifying issues to ensure healthy growth.

She emphasised the knowledge gained in farming and expressed her gratitude to Unilever for providing access to marketplaces, a support system that helps farmers avoid financial setbacks.

Additionally, the initiative aims to create employment opportunities, enhance the skills of local farmers, and promote sustainable agricultural practices, contributing to the economic growth and development of the Jozini region.

Minister for Agriculture, Mr. John Steenhuisen, highlighted the significance of partnerships, emphasising that collaboration is essential for achieving meaningful progress, aligning with the National Government’s focus on job creation, inclusive growth, and poverty alleviation.

Steenhuisen underscored that the Department of Agriculture and the broader agricultural community are uniquely positioned to address these priorities.

He also stressed that partnerships are not merely theoretical but are deeply rooted in the South African philosophy of Ubuntu, reflecting a commitment to collective effort and shared growth.
