Univar Solutions makes sustainability moves, establishes Scope 3 emissions target

USA – Univar Solutions LLC, a global provider of specialty ingredients and chemicals, has taken a step forward in its sustainability efforts by introducing a new emissions reduction goal and launching a collaborative program to address its supply chain impact.

The company has set its first Scope 3 emissions intensity reduction target and rolled out EcoScope, a program aimed at working with suppliers to reduce these emissions.

In addition, Univar Solutions became a member of the Together for Sustainability (TfS) initiative in April, a coalition of chemical companies focused on improving sustainability practices across the sector’s supply chain.

This move is expected to enhance collaboration and help the company achieve its sustainability targets.

Alexa Colin, Univar Solutions’ general counsel and corporate ESG lead, is at the forefront of these efforts. She highlighted that the company’s global Scope 1 and 2 emissions were reduced by 19.9% from their baseline in 2023.

The new target focuses on reducing Scope 3 emissions intensity by 15% by 2030, as part of the broader goal to reach net zero emissions by 2050.

TfS membership, which includes 52 chemical and ingredient manufacturers and distributors, offers Univar Solutions an opportunity to work closely with industry peers to share data and advance sustainability practices.

Kelly Gilroy, vice president of Commercial Sustainability at Univar Solutions, emphasized that TfS will play a critical role in driving the company’s commercial sustainability strategies.

Univar Solutions, known for its distribution of specialty chemicals and ingredients, has also recently expanded its partnership with BASF, enabling the company to distribute the full range of Baxxodur amine-based curing agents across the U.S. and Canada.

These curing agents play a key role in the development of epoxy, polyurea, and polyurethane systems, offering manufacturers the ability to fine-tune polymer formulations for specific applications.

Brian Jurcak, senior vice president of global product management at Univar Solutions, commented on the partnership, noting that the expanded collaboration reflects the companies’ long-standing relationship.

As the demand for high-performance materials continues to grow, the addition of the Baxxodur product line is seen as a valuable addition for industrial applications, particularly in the coatings, adhesives, sealants, and elastomers markets.
