USA – The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is adjusting its projections for broiler and turkey production in the country for the remainder of 2024 and into 2025.
These updated forecasts are part of the USDA’s latest World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report, which was released on September 12.
For U.S. broiler production, the USDA now expects output in 2024 to reach 47.1 billion pounds, up from the 46.9 billion pounds it forecast in its August report.
The adjustment comes after recent slaughter and hatchery data pointed to an increased number of chicks being placed in the third and fourth quarters of the year.
Looking ahead to 2025, the USDA is also increasing its expectations for broiler production.
The September report projects 2025 production to be 47.68 billion pounds, higher than the 47.5 billion pounds estimated in August.
According to the USDA, the increase is due to producers responding to better profit margins.
Regarding turkey production, the USDA raised its 2024 projection slightly to 5.13 billion pounds, up from the 5.12 billion pounds predicted last month.
This revision is attributed to recent data on the number of eggs set. However, the USDA’s forecast for turkey production in 2025 remains unchanged at 5.18 billion pounds.
This comes as the poultry industry faces ups and downs in the USA.
In 2022, broiler production reached 9.17 billion in number, a slight increase from 2021.
The total live weight of broilers produced was 59.3 billion pounds, also slightly up from the previous year.
The value of turkeys produced in 2022 was US$7.10 billion, a 21% rise compared to US$5.89 billion in 2021.
