UK – William Grant & Sons, the producer of iconic Scotch whisky brands Glenfiddich and Grant’s, has reached an agreement to acquire The Famous Grouse from Edrington’s subsidiary, The 1887 Company.
The acquisition also includes the Naked Malt Scotch whisky brand.
The deal, which is still pending regulatory approval, is expected to enhance William Grant’s already robust whisky portfolio.
In a statement, William Grant & Sons expressed enthusiasm about adding The Famous Grouse to its offerings, highlighting the brand’s long history and significant potential for innovation and growth in international markets.
The Famous Grouse, with a legacy spanning over 125 years, is one of Scotland’s most popular blended Scotch whiskies.
William Grant’s diverse portfolio already includes renowned Scotch whiskies such as Glenfiddich, Grant’s, and The Balvenie, as well as other spirits like Hendrick’s gin, Sailor Jerry rum, Tullamore Dew Irish whiskey, and Drambuie liqueur.
Edrington’s CEO, Scott McCroskie, stated that the decision to sell The Famous Grouse is part of a strategic shift to focus on the company’s core strength in the ultra-premium spirits category.
Edrington’s current portfolio includes premium brands such as The Macallan, The Glenrothes, Brugal rum, and Wyoming whiskey.
Edrington reported a 4.5 percent revenue increase to £1.33 billion (US$1.48B) in the fiscal year ending March 2024, with operating profits of £436.1 million (US$485.3M).
Despite this growth, the company has chosen to exit the blended Scotch whisky category to concentrate on its ultra-premium brands.
William Grant & Sons continues to expand its portfolio, having recently acquired Silent Pool Distillers and launched Wildmoor, a blended Scotch whisky featuring aged expressions between 21 and 40 years.
In May 2024, the Tullamore Dew whisky maker appointed Graeme Jenkins as Chief Financial Officer following the departure of Giles Wilson.
He previously held roles as CEO at Dobbies Garden Centres, CFO of Target in Australia, Chief Operating Officer and Finance Director at Virgin Media, and CFO of Menzies Aviation.
