AFRICA – In an effort to move the world to protect animals, World Animal Protection (WAP) will be exhibiting at the Africa Food Safety Summit form July 20-22, 2022.

Formerly known as, the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA),  WAP is an international non-profit animal rights organization that has been in operation since 1981.

It describes its vision as, “A world where animal rights matter and animal cruelty has ended.”

The charity, headquartered in London, has five regional hubs covering Africa, North and Latin America, Asia Pacific and Europe, and offices in 14 countries.

WAP works with governments, food businesses and farmers to improve the welfare of farmed animals. They encourage the general public to buy food produced in line with high welfare standards.

In 2013, the organization partnered with Compassion in World Farming to create a business benchmark on farm animal welfare (BBFAW). According to The Guardian, there has been a 10 percent rise in companies publishing farm animal welfare policies since the benchmark launched.

As part of their global animal welfare campaigns, in 2013 they successfully lobbied the United Nations to include language on animal welfare in two General Assembly Resolutions on agriculture and disaster risk reduction.

Dr. Victor Yamo, the Humane and Sustainable Agriculture Campaign Manager at WAP Africa, recently implored the government of Uganda to incorporate animal protection program in the curriculum, to simplify the dissemination and understanding of animal welfare knowledge.
