AFRICA – The World Poultry Foundation (WPF) has unveiled a new set of educational resources aimed at improving poultry management practices among small-scale farmers in Africa.
The training materials, which are freely accessible, come in a variety of formats including videos, infographics, and flip charts.
These resources are designed to assist training organizations in educating farmers about optimal feeding and watering practices for their poultry.
The initiative is part of a broader effort by WPF to enhance poultry farming techniques and boost the income levels of farmers across the continent.
The training module specifically focuses on ensuring that chickens receive adequate nourishment and hydration, which is crucial for their health and productivity.
In terms of poultry statistics in Africa, Egypt led the continent in chicken livestock numbers as of 2022, with a total of 300 million birds.
Nigeria was the second largest, housing approximately 249 million chickens. Overall, Africa’s poultry population was estimated at 2.4 billion birds.
South Africa, in 2020, was the top producer of chicken meat in Africa with 1.9 million metric tons, while Egypt produced 1.3 million metric tons.
In 2022, South Africa’s production reached over 170 million chickens, surpassing all other types of livestock in the country.
The average consumption of chicken per capita in Africa is 3.8 kilograms annually, making it the most widely consumed meat on the continent.
The growth of the poultry sector in Africa is driven by increasing global demand for chicken meat and eggs. The revenue from chicken meat production and exports was valued at US$11.4 billion in 2018, marking a 6.1% increase from the previous year.
Randall Ennis, CEO of the World Poultry Foundation, stated that the new training module aims to support small-scale poultry farmers by promoting healthy bird growth, which in turn enhances nutritional outcomes for their communities and boosts their economic prospects.
