UGANDA – Yalelo Uganda has announced a new collaboration with Silver Spoon Cafe & Restaurant, a popular dining spot located on Lumumba Avenue in Kampala.
This partnership aims to offer customers an enhanced culinary experience with tilapia sourced directly from Yalelo’s operations on Lake Victoria.
Yalelo Uganda, which began operations in 2019, has quickly established itself as a leader in the country’s aquaculture industry.
The company specializes in growing tilapia in the expansive, clear waters of Lake Victoria, where its fish cages rank among the largest on the African continent.
These cages provide the fish with ample space to swim and thrive against the lake’s natural currents, contributing to the health and quality of the tilapia.
Uganda’s fish farming industry has seen significant growth, with the country producing around 15,000 tons of fish annually through aquaculture.
This includes contributions from small-scale fish farmers, emerging commercial producers, and community-managed water reservoirs.
The aquaculture sector is a vital part of Uganda’s economy, employing over 700,000 people and attracting investments estimated at approximately US$200 million.
Yalelo Uganda, a subsidiary of First Wave Group—Africa’s leading producer of sustainably farmed tilapia—has been operational in Uganda for the past year.
The company’s ability to weather the disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic has drawn attention, particularly given its strategic response during the crisis.
Despite the global upheaval, Yalelo Uganda’s Chief Executive Officer, Piers Mudd, highlighted that the pandemic did not significantly derail the company’s progress.
Mudd attributed this resilience to the timing of the project, noting that Yalelo Uganda had been primarily in the construction phase over the past year.
It was only midway through the year that the company transitioned to a more operational stage.
Mudd acknowledged that the pandemic did present challenges.
However, he emphasized that Yalelo Uganda’s management team had effectively minimized these disruptions through careful planning and strategic foresight.
He pointed out that diligent preparation, contingency measures, and strong coordination among the team allowed the company to keep its construction activities largely on track.
