ZIBAMBWE – Zimbabwean rancher Collins Tafireyi set a new auction record on Saturday by purchasing a Boran bull for R8 million (approximately US$444,000).
The historic transaction took place during the Hurwitz Farming Production Auction at the Bull Ring Auction House in Davel, Mpumalanga.
Tafireyi, a Boran breeder from Sinyo Boran Stud in Hwedza, Mashonaland East province, emerged victorious after a competitive bidding war against his friend and neighbor, Rogers Sithole of Black Ox Farming.
This milestone purchase marks a significant achievement for Tafireyi, who has been in the specialized cattle breeding business for just three years.
The centerpiece of the auction, a Boran bull named Lot 10 Cyclone, attracted considerable interest from bidders.
Tafireyi expressed his excitement about the acquisition, stating, “This bull embodies the highest standard of breeding excellence, and I’m thrilled about the future opportunities it brings to Sinyo Boran Stud.”
Boran cattle are renowned for their adaptability and superior genetics, making them highly valued among cattle ranchers.
Tafireyi’s success highlights the quality and potential of Boran breeding.
A spokesperson for Hurwitz Farming commented, “The record-breaking sale of Lot 10 Cyclone highlights the exceptional quality of Boran cattle and the dedication of breeders like Collins Tafireyi.”
Tafireyi’s winning bid not only demonstrated his commitment to excellence but also signaled a pivotal moment for the cattle ranching community in both Zimbabwe and South Africa.
Sithole, who also made significant purchases at the auction, praised the quality of the cattle on offer.
“The cattle today were amazing. My friend Tafireyi acquired an exceptional bull, one of the best-bred I’ve ever seen. We’re committed to investing in superior genetics to enhance our herd,” he said. Sithole emphasized the importance of premium genetics for advancing cattle breeds, noting, “It’s not just about the cost; it’s about the future potential.”
